Aftercare
Looking after your new tattoo
This is the same Aftercare 101 you get at the shop, so you have it on your phone when you need it. If your artist tells you something different for your piece, their instructions win.
Day 1
- Leave the bandage on for the first 2 to 4 hours.
- Once it is off, wash your hands, then gently clean the tattoo 2 to 3 times a day with antibacterial, fragrance-free soap. Whatever you do, do not scrub it.
- Pat it dry with a clean paper towel, or let it air dry.
Days 2 to 3
- Keep washing 2 to 3 times a day and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer after each wash.
Days 4 to 6
- Same routine: wash and moisturize 2 to 3 times a day.
- Let the tattoo breathe. Avoid tight clothing that rubs on it and keep fabric off it when you can.
Days 6 to 14
- Scabs harden and start to shed. Do not pick or pull them. That damages the skin and the tattoo.
- Itching picks up around now. Keep applying an alcohol-free, fragrance-free moisturizer several times a day to take the edge off.
Day 15 and beyond
- The larger scabs come away and any remaining dead skin resolves. The tattoo can look dry and dull for a while. That is normal and temporary.
- Keep moisturizing with the same product and the colour comes back.
Avoid until it is healed
- Soaking it: no baths, hot tubs, pools, lakes or rivers for at least two to three weeks. Showers are fine.
- Direct sun and tanning beds. Once healed, use sunscreen on it every time. Sun is what fades tattoos.
- Gym sessions that sweat on it or rub it for the first few days.
- Scented lotions, petroleum-heavy products in thick layers, and anything with alcohol.
When to call the shop
Some redness, swelling and tenderness for a few days is normal. Call us at 825-973-7592 if you see spreading redness, heat, pus, a bad smell, or a fever. Those can be signs of infection and you should also see a doctor or call Health Link at 811.
